New Review! Torrent by Gemma James, 3 Cranky Stars

Torrent (Condemned, #1)Torrent by Gemma James
My rating: 3 of 5 stars

*** 3 Cranky Stars ***

This is a solid, good dark read, technically well-written and should appeal to fans in the genre.

The story centers on Alex De Luca and Rafe “Choker” Mason. Eight years earlier, as a troubled teen, Alex had Rafe, the promising fighter and family friend, sent to prison on a lie.

When Rafe’s time is served, Alex receives a note indicating he hasn’t forgotten the role she played in his incarceration.

With her own problems: an abusive family member and the guilt Alex carries from the death of her mother and sending Rafe to prison, Alex longs for escape. Her wish comes true, but not in the way she imagined it.

Hell-bent on revenge, Rafe is not the man he used to be. He ruthlessly executes his plan, taking prisoners and keeping hostages. There begins the torturous process of getting the truth via pain, suffering, humiliation, and sexual degradation.

Torrent is a book where you get exactly what you expect. There are few surprises and some of the plot twists felt a bit flat. There were secondary threads that didn’t really go anywhere and I wondered why they were there in the first place. I waited, expecting further development, but it didn’t come. Perhaps they were holding markers to be continued in the series?

But, I felt they were largely unnecessary in this story because they didn’t really add anything and detracted from the main storyline.

If you like dark romance and Stockholm relationships, then I’m sure you will enjoy this story.
