New Review! Escape from Witchwood Hollow by Jordan Elizabeth Miererk, 3.5 Cranky Stars

Escape from Witchwood HollowEscape from Witchwood Hollow by Jordan Elizabeth Mierek
My rating: 3 of 5 stars

*** 3.5 Cranky Stars ***

This story is aimed at younger readers.

First off we meet Honoria, a fifteen year old girl who lost her parents to the 9/11 attacks. She and her older brother moved in with their Aunt and Uncle afterwards and relocated to a small farming town called Arnn in hopes of escaping the memories of their past.

New life, new home, new school and new friends. In order to fit in, Honoria agreed to go out with two other girls from her class on a “witch-hunt”. Apparently, Arnn had a famous witch deep in the town’s forest aptly named Witchwood Hollow. Not really believing all the superstition, Honoria agreed on a dare and ended up getting lost in the dense forest.

Then we find ourselves going back several decades in time to Lady Clifford who started it all. Fast forward a couple of decades and we meet Albertine, another young lady from England.

The story evolved between these three, going backwards and forwards in time as history began to unravel on what truly happened in Witchwood Hollow. Honoria and a friend went on a mission to solve the mystery and stop the witch from trapping wanderers in her forest.

Initially, the constant time-hopping and multiple POVs confused me a little bit until i got used to it and found that it actually made sense. It gave me different pieces of the puzzle that was Witchwood Hollow until everything came together in the end.

Having mentioned at the start that this is listed as a Children’s book, there were parts in the story which appealed to me. The pacing of the story moved along quite well. Even the time-hopping was thought of quite well and spanned out in sequence to the events happening in the present time with Honoria. There were no info dumps as historical books tend to do to make them authentic. There was even an element of romance, plenty of suspense and drama thrown in the mix.

There’s a couple of things I would have liked though. One, more background info on Lady Clifford’s powers and two, maybe a slightly different ending. The first one was for clarity and the second was simply from my selfish nature as a reader and of no fault of the author.

Overall, it’s a good story and kept me reading straight-on from page one to last in one sitting.
